Barry started the discussion some time back. The idea was to have a skeptical news aggregator for the Ottawa Skeptics' site. It stayed in the back of my mind for a while and then floated to the front at TAM 7 when I had the discussion with Tim Farley of whatstheharm.net. Recently I stumbled on Yahoo Pipes. I think Pipes appeals to the musician in me because it resembles the patch bay in a recording studio (the image on the left is an actual image of the pipe created). In addition, I was excited to see that several people had created pipes which brought together skeptical news feeds. One pipe in particular, authored by someone named Mark, had done work that I could build on.
The result is the module on the bottom left of the front page titled "Latest Skeptical News."
Currently sources include:
- Skeptic North
- Skepchick
- Neurologica blog
- Bad Science
- Quackometer
- The New England Skeptical Society
- Podblack Cat
- Bad Astronomy
- Panda's Thumb
- Holford Watch
- Aetiology
- Respectful Insolence
- Denialism Blog
- Science Based Medicine
- Rationally Speaking
- The JREF
- The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe
- Ottawa Skeptics
- What's the Harm
- Discovery - 80 Beats, Intersection, Discoblog
- Skeptic Magazine
Essentially, the titles of the latest 25 entries from these sources are shown. If you "mouse over" any one of the titles, you are provided a tool tip box with the first portion of the post and you can follow the link to the full article. I'd be happy to hear any feedback, additions, subtractions or general ideas about the usefulness of this. I am also happy to share the Pipe (musician jokes allowed) with anyone who would be interested in modifying or using it. Here is the rss feed.
